Supreme Court justices ‘breaking the law’ to deliver for donors installing them: expert
The hosts of the Legal AF podcast are sounding the alarm over what they call a corruption crisis at the Supreme Court, arguing the justices have been captured by the billionaires who bankrolled their rise.
On a recent episode, host Alex Aronson laid out the case as he introduced legal scholars Nikolas Bowie and Daphna Renan, authors of the forthcoming book Supremacy. Aronson said the court is deeply conservative and compromised.

“A number of the justices have been exposed as breaking the law, entangled with billionaires, delivering results for the interests that have put them in place on this court,” Aronson charged.
The accusation comes after years of reporting on the justices’ cozy ties to wealthy benefactors.

Justice Clarence Thomas has faced scrutiny over dozens of luxury trips funded by billionaire friends, and later admitted that GOP megadonor Harlan Crow covered a private club membership and lavish travel. Justice Samuel Alito has drawn ethics scrutiny over an undisclosed Alaska fishing trip on a Republican billionaire’s private jet.
Lawmakers have pressed for answers, with senators demanding that billionaire Paul Singer and judicial power broker Leonard Leo turn over a full accounting of gifts to the justices. Critics note the court adopted its own ethics code only after the revelations piled up, with no clear way to enforce it.
For Aronson and his guests, the pattern is evidence the court is delivering for the donor class that installed it.
Bowie and Renan argued in Supremacy that the greater danger is the sheer power the court wields, insisting a bench “entangled with billionaires” should never have been able to dominate American life in the first place.
