Suspect accused of decapitating relatives using a chainsaw

A 911 caller told dispatchers that her loved one was “not violent” – just hours before police found her and another woman’s decapitated bodies in an Alabama home.

Thomas Steele, 47, was charged this week with two counts of murder in connection with the case.

Transcripts from a 911 call revealed the hours leading up to the grisly scene discovered by authorities at the Mobile, Alabama, home.

Around 11 a.m. Monday, a woman called 911 to say her nephew, Steele, was “off his medication” and that she didn’t know who to contact, according to WALA.

“He gave away his phone and giving his car away. He’s doing some bizarre things, and I don’t know if that’s good. He says he’s just going to live for God and not going to have any kind of electronics,” the woman told officials.

Dispatchers asked the aunt if she needed medical help, and she told them that Steele had bipolar disorder. In his mind, he was following God, the caller said.

The call continued and the woman said Steele was acting out. It was then that dispatchers asked if he was being harmful.

“I called 988 and tried to talk to him. He’s calm! He’s not violent or anything. So, I guess I’ll just let it play itself out,” the caller stated, according to WALA.

Dispatchers gave the woman the police department’s phone number and the call ended.

Roughly two hours later, police were called to the home and found Steele waiting outside. Inside, authorities found the bodies of Steele’s aunt and his grandmother. The victims were identified as Dora Boone, 85, and Christy Deloach, 65, according to WALA.

Both victims had been decapitated by a chainsaw, police said. A third woman, with special needs, was also home at the time of the incident, but was not harmed.

Steele is now being held in an Alabama jail without bond.
