Donald Trump’s $500 refund checks for Obamacare enrollees are now on their way to nearly one million Americans across the country weeks before the midterm elections.

The President has mandated the payouts for patients he claimed were overcharged through the Affordable Care Act’s federal health insurance exchange.

More than 950,000 Americans in 30 states will receive the checks, the administration says. It claims the refunds will total in the hundreds of millions.

The White House claims that the Biden administration overcharged ‘user fees’ that resulted in higher premiums paid through Healthcare.gov.

Trump’s team claims these levies resulted in ‘a significant surplus of funds that were not used to benefit the Americans who paid these higher premiums.’

The Treasury Department will begin sending out the payments on Wednesday, according to an official who spoke to USA Today.

In addition to the checks, recipients will receive letters signed by Trump, the outlet reported.

‘For years, the Biden administration overcharged you to fund the operation of HealthCare.gov,’ Trump writes in the letter. ‘That money belongs to hard-working Americans, not the Government, and now I’m returning it to you!’

Coming just weeks ahead of the midterm elections, the checks may provide some monetary relief to Americans struggling with grocery and gas costs before they head to the polls.

Just 27 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, a CNN/SSRS survey found last week. Still, stocks have soared during his second term.

The rising cost of healthcare has also long been a concern of voters facing increased pricing year over year.

US health care spending reached $5.3 trillion in 2024, roughly $15,500 per person, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

By comparison, the figure was $1.3 trillion in 2000.

Republicans may stand to benefit from joyous check recipients who receive a signed letter from Trump with less than a month before early voting begins and Americans decide which party should rule Congress.

But Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer labeled the move a ‘slap in the face to hardworking Americans’ and ‘truly insulting.’

To qualify, individuals from one of the 30 states eligible for refunds must have purchased 2026 coverage on Healthcare.gov and received no subsidy, meaning they paid full price.

Eligible individuals have already been identified by the government and therefore do not need to apply to receive the $500 payment.

Eligible states include Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

The $500 Obamacare refund checks are separate from the President’s pledge to pay every American $5,000 if Republicans manage to maintain control of the House of Representatives and Senate – thereby preventing Trump from becoming a lame duck.

The controversial proposal came as the president was speaking at the Republican Party’s midterm convention earlier this month.

During that same week, Trump announced the Obamacare refunds.

The $5,000 check proposal stunned conservatives, as the proposal is estimated to cost between $1 and $3 trillion.

Republican allies and enemies of the president immediately lashed out, calling the move fiscally irresponsible and a ‘bribe.’

Trump has sought to pay out Americans with large sums before.

He promised Americans would receive a $5,000 ‘DOGE dividend’ and a $2,000 ‘tariff dividend.’

Neither has been paid out, and the administration has largely remained mum on the expensive awards.

However, Trump did make good on his ‘warrior dividend’ promise, which paid out $1,776 to 1.4 million military officials in December.

Earlier this month, Vice President JD Vance announced a major crackdown on rampant ‘fraud’ found in the Obamacare healthcare system.

The Trump administration announced plans to remove about 760,000 people from ACA coverage and subject hundreds of thousands more to additional eligibility checks, adding that it has already begun doing so.

The move comes as Vance’s White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud expands its campaign against what the administration describes as abuse of taxpayer-funded programs.

Vance said officials had uncovered what he described as a major fraud operation involving insurance brokers.

‘We found a fraud ring that had 40 brokerage agents who had funneled 50,000 people into the Obamacare system fraudulently,’ Vance said.

‘Many of those people quite literally didn’t even exist. We had a system in this country that rewarded brokers, that made people rich for enrolling fake people in programs that are meant to ensure that our fellow citizens have health care. This was a scandal,’ he continued.

The administration estimates the latest action will prevent approximately $2.2 billion in federal subsidy payments.
