Fresh off being crowned the 2026 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Minnesota Lynx guard Olivia Miles learned the hard way how difficult postseason basketball can be.

The top-seeded Lynx saw their championship hopes dashed in an upset as the New York Liberty swept the series. For New York, the historic victory meant becoming the first No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in WNBA history, while it marked a brutal rookie reality check for Miles after a strong regular season.

Throughout the two-game series, New York’s veteran defense completely bottled up the young star. Miles struggled to find her rhythm, culminating in a tough Game 2 where she was held to just five points on 1-of-8 shooting.

The frustration boiled over in the third quarter when Breanna Stewart drove hard to the basket. As Miles lunged to contest the shot, she caught the Liberty forward flush in the face. Officials reviewed the contact and upgraded it to a Flagrant 1 foul.

Stewart shot the resulting free throws, while Miles spent the entire fourth quarter benched as Minnesota attempted to mount a comeback without her. She did not return to the game after that.

Miles began trending on social media the day after the game with some fans coming to the 23-year-old player’s defense and others sharing disappointment in how everything turned out.

“Calling Olivia Miles a playoff choker when this is her rookie year is illogical,” one user wrote on X. “Lynx definitely did not bring the playoff energy as a team. That however doesn’t take away from the incredible season Miles had. She 101% deserves ROTY.” Another user wrote, “Olivia miles folded in the playoffs. Damn I wanted her to win it all.”

After the game, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve spoke up about the season Miles had.

“I think the biggest thing we wanted to share with her was that what she did as a rookie just hasn’t been done before and without her, we’re not in this space that we’re in,” Reeve said during a post-game press conference in a clip reshared by sports journalist Andrew Dukowitz on X. “The fact that she’s able to learn some hard lessons in her first year… I told her to continue to be humble and be curious and who she was as a teammate. All those things, and things will be just fine. It just doesn’t feel pretty right now.”
