SpaceX’s Starship reaches orbit, deploys satellites despite engine loss

First orbital milestone: Starship reached orbit for the first time, marking a critical step toward commercial use and NASA lunar missions.

Engine setback managed: An upper-stage engine shut down early, but controllers adjusted the plan to complete orbital insertion and satellite deployment.

Satellite payload success: 26 Starlink V3 satellites were deployed, each with 10x the capacity of previous versions, boosting SpaceX’s broadband network.Since 2023, Starship has completed 13 suborbital missions. These flights were focused on safety and incremental learning to prepare for orbital operations. On its 14th test mission, SpaceX’s Starship-Super Heavy rocket reached orbit for the first time. This marked a milestone in the vehicle’s development, as previous flights had not achieved orbital insertion.Following stage separation, the Super Heavy booster executed an engine-controlled descent and splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico. The descent was managed to control the booster’s trajectory into the ocean. The mission, originally planned for a multi-orbit profile, was shortened to about three hours after an upper-stage engine shutdown. Following the shutdown, controllers opted for an earlier deorbit burn.During its inaugural orbital mission, SpaceX’s Starship deployed Starlink satellites. This demonstrates the rocket’s ability to carry and release payloads in space.SpaceX plans to use Starship for deploying high-capacity satellites and for missions supporting lunar landings. These capabilities are enabled by the rocket’s large payload capacity and reusability.NASA intends to use a variant of SpaceX’s Starship to land astronauts on the moon in 2028 as part of the Artemis program. The successful orbital flight is seen as progress toward certifying the system for human spaceflight. The Starship rocket is designed for reusability, with the goal of lowering launch costs and enabling more frequent missions. This design feature is central to its commercial and exploration objectives.Following the first orbital launch, SpaceX plans to implement upgrades to Starship’s heat shield. These improvements are part of the next phase of testing.
