A Florida teen died after falling nearly 30 feet from an abandoned condo building just two days before she was set to begin a new school year.
Roylynn Scott, 16, died after falling at River Preserve, an abandoned condominium complex near the Indian River Lagoon, the night of Saturday, Aug. 8, according to CBS affiliate WPEC and Treasure Coast News.
“Indian River County Sheriff’s deputies and fire rescue personnel responded to 9846 Riverside Preserve Drive in Sebastian after receiving a 911 call reporting that a 16-year-old female had fallen from a concrete structure and was critically injured,” the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office said in a release obtained by PEOPLE.
“Upon arrival, deputies located a group of juveniles and the critically injured teen on the second floor of an abandoned four-story building,” authorities said.
“The investigation determined the group had been trespassing on the property and was on the roof when the teen fell through a hole in the roof, dropping approximately 29 feet to the floor below,” the sheriff’s office added.
Scott and the group were trespassing when she fell through a hole in the roof and dropped about 29 feet to the floor below. CPR was performed, and the teen was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she was eventually pronounced dead, officials said.
“Criminal Investigations detectives are actively investigating,” authorities said. “At this time, all evidence indicates this was an accident.”
An obituary for the teen stated that she “passed away peacefully” at the hospital on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Scott was a student at Vero Beach High School, where school was set to begin on Monday, Aug. 10, according to Treasure Coast News.
A moment of silence was held at the school’s season opener football game less than a week after her death on Friday, Aug. 14, the outlet reported, citing an Indian River County School District spokesperson.
Purple was worn at the Billy Livings Field game to honor Scott with her favorite color, according to CBS affiliate WPEC. A photo shared in a GoFundMe that Scott’s grandmother, Carole Melasi, created showed the teen with her hair dyed a vibrant shade of violet.
Melasi described Scott’s death as a “heartbreaking loss” in the fundraiser.
“No family is ever prepared for this kind of pain, and Roylynn’s passing has left loved ones grieving while trying to make arrangements to honor and remember her,” she wrote. “During this incredibly difficult time, Carole is asking for support as the family comes together to lay Roylynn to rest with love and dignity.”
