Little League World Series umpire’s ‘atrocious’ call ends Iowa-California game

This Friday’s Little League World Series game between Iowa and California was undoubtedly a thriller, but the final out of the game left a lot to be desired.

After lefty phenom Cooper Thissen struck out 15 batters for Iowa, the coaching staff brought in Anthony Johnson Jr. to get the final two outs of the game. Although he has potential, Johnson found himself in a bases loaded jam with his team only leading 1-0.

Fortunately for Johnson, his 3-2 pitch with two outs was called strike three to secure a win for the club from Davenport Northwest.

That being said, fans are convinced the umpire assigned to this Little League World Series game gave Iowa a gift with that final call. The pitch appeared to be a ball out of the strike zone, which would’ve tied the game 1-1. Instead, Iowa was able to get across the finish line.

“Is that Angel Hernandez behind the plate. Not even near the zone,” one fan commented.

“What is that strike call? No one can hit that! People will say ‘too close to take.’ Yea… no such thing as ‘too close.’ It’s either a strike or a ball,” a second fan said. “Get the OBS System in the Little League World Series.”

“That is an atrocious call,” a third fan wrote.

“Umpire bailed them out. Johnson was struggling that last pitch should have been called a ball,” a fourth fan declared.

Not only was Thissen electric on the mound for Iowa, he gave his team a 1-0 lead by crushing a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning.

“Cooper Thissen is such a joy to watch. Incredible player who seems like an even better kid. You could watch Little League for a hundred years and not see a better individual performance than what we saw today,” one person wrote on X.

“Maybe the greatest Little League game of all time. 1-0. Combined no hitter. Iowa takes down California. 15 Ks and a home run for Cooper Thissen,” another person commented.

Congratulations to Thissen and the entire Iowa team on its 1-0 win.
