ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel issues ‘sickening’ plea about ICE at polling stations for midterms
Jimmy Kimmel has issued a serious warning to his fans on social media ahead of next week’s midterm elections.
The comedian, 64, shared an Al Jazeera clip, first posted by Justin Theroux, 55, showing ICE agents threatening a bystander with a gun during an arrest in Los Angeles this week. Agents tackled Venezuelan national Angel Luis Gonzales Lobo, 27, into the bushes during a targeted immigration operation on Friday, October 30.

Footage shows a nearby man walking two dogs attempting to intervene or moving a dropped pepper-spray canister away – and an agent appeared to shove him into the bushes, holding a handgun directly to his face before reholstering the weapon and walking away. The footage has sparked heavy criticism from local officials who have condemned the tactics as aggressive and dangerous.

Sharing the clip on his Instagram Stories, Kimmel told his fans to keep this in mind when voting during the midterms on November 3. He wrote, “friendly reminder as we head to the polls… There are still masked thugs with zero oversight kidnapping people across the country and that is f—— sickening.”
After witnessing the incident on Friday, neighbors said they were upset by the way the situation escalated. Witness Damari Butler told ABC 7, “It was a no-questions-asked thing. They just came up on him, and it was a tussle in the bushes.” Butler, who filmed the incident, said, “The guy with the dogs, he stepped in a little bit.
“The ICE Agent pulled out a gun, backed him up in the bushes with the gun to his face, which was insane. At that point, I’m going to be honest with you, I thought that was the end for him.”
The agent eventually walked back to the man being arrested on the ground. “At one point, it did look like they may have tased him while he was on the ground, and then they tried to hogtie him, and then they threw him in the truck,” Butler shared, describing the incident as “very chaotic.”
He added, “It didn’t feel like anybody actually knew what they were doing on that side. It just felt like, ‘If we need to use excessive force to get what we need — do it.'”
Kimmel is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump and has sharply criticized ICE. After the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretty during federal operations in Minneapolis, Minnesota, earlier this year, Kimmel delivered an emotioanl monologue, describing ICE agents as “poorly trained, shamefully led, mask-wearing goons.”
The late-night host also criticized Trump, 80, on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as he accused the president and his administration of dismissing protests, pushing controversial investigations into victims and witnesses, and encouraging chaos and fear in the streets.
The latest incident in LA came weeks after a federal judge issued an order blocking immigration officers from making warrantless arrests in Southern California unless they determine the person is likely to escape.
In a preliminary injunction granted Sept. 2 and unsealed Wednesday, September 16, US District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong said the government must consider the “totality of the circumstances known to the agent or officer” regarding a person’s likelihood of escape before making a civil immigration arrest without a warrant.
The lawsuit was filed last fall by the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California, Public Counsel, and Los Angeles immigrant advocacy groups during an unprecedented surge of immigration enforcement in the region. The order applies in the Central District of California, which includes Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
Frimpong also ordered the government to thoroughly document the probable cause that leads to an arrest before a warrant could be obtained. The mere fact that someone is in the country illegally is not enough to justify a warrantless arrest, she said in her order.
